So, you have decided to get yourself a rabbit or two to experience the warmth and companionship raising bunnies can offer. Perhaps you have been given one as a gift. What do you do first? You will need rabbit cages or bunny hutches for your new furry friends to live in and some rabbit cage supplies.

Making a decision about bunny cages depends on the number of rabbits you plan to raise. For many rabbits you will need more space for them. Experts recommend a space no smaller than 30 inches by 30 inches by 14 inches for a single rabbit. This is enough room for basic movement and sleep. You will need a bunny cages at least 36 inches by 30 inches by 18 inches for a large adult rabbit. There are dwarf rabbit cages for dwarf rabbits.

The best material for bunny cages has been found to be steel wire because of its ease of cleaning and sanitation. Wood rabbit cages are very hard to maintain and can become a favorite chew toy by your rabbit. Rabbit cages made of wire are the best to use. Stretched steel wire on wooden frames are a good way to make rabbit hutches for multiple pet rabbits. These can be sized for the number of rabbits that you are keeping but keep the exposed wood to a minimum. Bunny rabbits just love to nibble on wood.

When you have you pet rabbits indoors it is important to keep them out of drafts and direct sunlight. High temperatures can stress rabbits and cause to overheat. This overheating can bring on illnesses. Be careful to protect your bunnies from predators whether they live inside or outside your home.

You should install floor boards for the larger breads of rabbits so they can sit comfortably. These are also good for hock protection for rabbits with thinner hair in their feet.

Pellets are recommended for both pet and show rabbits. They contain most of the nutrients rabbits need to stay healthy and hearty. Rabbit pellets are cheaper and easier to buy in bulk, either online, or at your local feed store. You only have to watch your consumption and keep the feed fresh. Mold growing in the pellets can sicken your rabbits and nobody wants that. The amount of feed needed is dependant on the number and size of your bunny population.

The most important item in your rabbit’s diet is some form of roughage. Clover and alfalfa hays are favorites of rabbits but they are very rich in protein and calcium and should be used sparingly as treats. Timothy hay and oat, wheat, coastal and Bahia hays are more healthy. Given daily, these should pose no problem.

The importance of adequate watering for your rabbit cannot be overstated. Unlike humans, rabbits do not absorb water from their food, so they must be provided with fresh water daily. The water container, whether a water tube, crock or dish needs to be kept clean of debris. Get a water container big enough for the number of animals you have. Be especially careful that the water will not be kicked over and be sure to check the water supply often, especially during hot summer days. Be sure to watch the temperature in your bunny hutches during long hot day. A few days of heavy heat and humidity can be fatal to lodgers in an outdoor rabbit cages.
